Christmas Tradition: Happy Birthday Jesus Cake

My family will be coming together for Christmas this year and I'm really looking forward to it.  We have a lot of Christmas traditions in my family.  Ever since I was young, my parents bought a cake for Christmas and we would sing the Happy Birthday song to Jesus as a way to remember why we celebrate the holiday.  This year, my sister asked me if I would make the cake for the celebration.

I just made my very first cake from scratch a few weeks ago (you may recall that adventure) so I'm definitely not a professional cake maker/decorator, but I certainly love to eat cake, so I said "sure thing!"  Plus, I can't turn down a challenge.

I did some browsing on Pinterest and here are some ideas:

Do you all know me well enough now to know that I'll probably always start with red velvet cake?  Not yet? Well, I probably always will.  Red velvet cupcakes = my favorite.   Unfortunately, one of my sisters is allergic to red food dye & chocolate and this would be a double whammy.  I guess I could split the batch.

A nice look to a Christmas cake--I like.

Aren't these fancy and fun?  Something like this would be cool.

So these don't look like cake, but they are--one bite is all it takes.  I think these are really fun, but I probably won't go this route.

Now, this is my kind of cupcake--a giant cupcake.  I saw one of these pans in Bed Bath & Beyond last night and I was really tempted to buy it.  Maybe I'll get this one!

So many choices!  Do I go a traditional route, or do I spice things up and make cupcakes?  Hmm...I'm not completely sure.  Whatever I decide, I'll be sure to share pictures of the final product with you all.

What do you think?

  1. The cupcakes are really pretty -- and they'd leave more room for error. Make a mistake, just move on to the next one! But somehow that sounds more pessimistic than I intended it to.

  4. That is a GREAT idea! I think that would be a great tradition to take on for our daughter and future kids. I'm looking for tradition ideas for our family so if you have any other ideas please let me know!

  5. Have you ever made a yule log out of cake? They are absolutely delicious and works of art in themselves. I think they're usually chocolate but you could totally do them vanilla. I swear ... you need to stop posting these cake posts (or I need to stop reading them after work and before dinner) ... i want to jump in your post and gobble everything up!
