Contest: So You Think You're Thrifty?

While video chatting with one of my sisters a few weeks ago, she mentioned her love for cool interior design pieces but said there were two things holding her back:  time and money.  I acknowledged the fact that it can take time to decorate your home just the way you want it (especially while raising little ones) and that a lot of home decor items can cost an arm and a leg when all is said and done.  These two resources seem to be very limiting when it comes to a lot of things in life, huh?  I'm always trying to figure out the whole time piece--perhaps that will be a lifelong process?  And I certainly don't consider myself an expert on the money "thing" either.  Perhaps they're both lifelong processes.  Either way, I offered a piece of advice to my sister with two simple words:  thrift stores!

Yes, thrift stores.  It's amazing what you can find in thrift stores that's comparable to high-end merchandise but at a much more reasonable price.  And, if you do it right, you can find hidden treasures in just one stop.  After uttering those two words, my sister reluctantly agreed with me and the subject changed--but I didn't forget.

A few days after our conversation, I went to a local thrift store because I had a free 30 minutes to myself (a rare but cherished nugget of time).  While I was walking around, this little beauty caught my attention:

I had no intention to purchase it, but when I saw it, I thought it would be fun to ask my sister how much she thought the store was selling it fo.  So she guessed and I told her how much it was.  THEN, I came across this lamp online (see below) and sent her a link to show her the price difference.

Now, there are obviously some differences between the two, but the look is very similar.  Actually, I think I prefer the thrift store version over the online version anyway.  The price of the online lamp?  $75!

Now it's your turn!  How much do you think the thrift store lamp was going for?  Let's make this fun and have a little contest.  Who doesn't love a contest?  I know I do!  And if you don't, well...just ignore everything after this sentence and you'll be fine.

To participate in the contest, guess how much the thrift store lamp was being sold for by posting your dollar amount guess in the comments below this blog post or in the Facebook comments below the post about this contest.  The person to post the closest dollar amount guess will win.  Should two (or more) of you have the same guess, I will determine a winner between the two (or more) through random draw.  Only one entry per person.  If you enter more than once, I'll choose your lamest entry--kidding, I'll only use your first entry and the others will be voided.

What's at stake?  A special smell-good prize from our contest sponsor Lead Scentsy Consultant Sara Rowe  (thanks, Sara!) and, of course, bragging rights as the thriftiest reader on The Foreign Domestic!!!... (for this week, at least).

There's no purchase necessary to participate in this fun little competition.  It will begin at the time of this post and will end when the clock strikes midnight (Central Standard Time) on 1 March 2014.

I'll announce the winner later in the day on 1 March 2014 on The Foreign Domestic Facebook Page so be sure to check there to see if you won.

Who will be the winner of the first  "Look Who's Thrifty" award??
Let the guessing begin.

It's About Being Healthy

Hey Friends!

How are things going for you all?  I'm doing well--keeping myself very occupied as a stay-at-home-work-at-home mama.  In my world, baby naps = time to work!

One of the things I've been working on over the past few months, is getting my health back.  You can read more about the specifics of my story at  www.revivingfitness.com.  You may also remember I posted about it previously here.

In our society, it's easy to get sucked into the "being skinny is the best thing" mentality (I've been in that black hole before).  But, it's really not.  You can be skinny and really unhealthy!  But if you focus on getting healthy by eating well & exercising on a consistent basis, you'll naturally shed that weight.

So, that's what I've been doing.  I've been focusing on eating well an exercising on a regular basis for the past 9 months.  Want to see some of my results?  Well, here they are...

This first picture is of me holding up my pre-pregnancy jeans.  The jeans I wore that fit well--not too loose, not too tight.  They were JUST right.  Now, they're way too big for me!  2 sizes too big.

This next picture is of me holding my  pre-pregnancy "skinny" jeans.  You know, the jeans that you only wear when you're feeling nice and slim?  These were the jeans for me.  Yep, they're too big for me also.  One size too big.

I'm not posting these pictures to brag or to rub my weight loss in anyone's face.  I'm really just posting them to encourage you all on your journey to improved health and fitness.  Set a goal and go for it.  Be consistent and you can do it!!
